Two Items Needed
Are you ready to make your knitting projects easier? If so, using a yarn swift and ball winder is essential. Not only will they help you make the most of your skeins of yarn, they will also save you time and energy. In this blog, I will explain exactly how to use a yarn swift and a ball winder to create workable balls of yarn. With a few simple steps and a minimal amount of time, you'll be able to get your projects ready to go. Plus, you'll find out the best way to store your yarn to ensure it’s in perfect condition when you need it. So don't miss out on the craft of the pros, learn how to use a yarn swift and ball winder today.

Once you have the space, you’ll then need the right equipment.
A yarn swifter is essential for winding yarn into finished skeins. A swift is a circular device with prongs that secure the yarn to the swift while it is being wound. It can be manually operated or powered, depending on your preference.
To use it, you secure the yarn to the swift and then pass it through the yarn swifter, as the swift spins. This operation allows the yarn to be wound into even, neat skeins with ease.

Once you have your swifter and ball winder set up, carefully place the hank of yarn over the yarn swifter. Straighten the yarn so the strands run even around the yarn swifter.
Adjust the yarn swifter as shown in the video. Cut the tiny threads that kept your hank together. Careful not to snip your yarn. Cut the ties as well. Find the end piece and attach to ball winder.
You are ready to wind--so much fun to see the transformation.
This should be an easy process but sometimes it may get tangled. If this happens try straighting the yarn on the yarn swift. If it can't be untangled you may need to cut your yarn--straighten--tie ends together--and restart you winding process.
Pay close attention to the ball winder to ensure it is winding like a cake ball. Once the yarn is all on the ball winder, carefully take off by grabbing the botton of the yarn cake. It will be tight but will slip off.
Using a yarn swifter and ball winder is quite simple, and it can make a huge difference to your yarn preparations. It is an economical, efficient, and practical way to untangle and organize hanks of yarn into more manageable balls.
Not only will this reduce the time it takes to cast on a new project, but it will also help ensure your threads are tangle-free. A yarn swifter and ball winder are a must-have addition to your knitting and crochet arsenal to make your crafting experience smoother and simpler.
