SEW SATURDAY: Why Vegan Cork Leather is a Great Choice for Applique

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

Vegan Cork Leather--Easy Applique

Many of you already know how much I love working with cork fabric (Vegan Leather). It is so each to work with, versitile, durable, and easy to sew.

What I used to hate to do was applique until I tried with cork fabric--cork fabric doesnt fray and I dont have to applique with a satin stitch. There are a few fabrics that doesn't require a satin stitch--wool, faux leather, and cork fabric. A satin stitch is used to keep fabrics from fraying but with these few fabrics you can use a regular straight stitch to attach to another fabric.

Lets get started

1. Where to Purchase: My favorite place to purchase cork fabric is from sallietomato.com, fabricfunhouse.com or Amazon. If you purchase from sallietomato.com please use code MONARAE for a 10% discount off your purchase.

There are many places to purchase cork fabric including Hobby Lobby, JoAnn Fabrics and I have even found some at Walmart.

Fabric Fun House has this great video explaining cork fabrics you might enjoy-Video-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5p3R6fTeYNw

2. You can use any kind of cork fabric for appliquing. I have used the really thin cork and the regular cork. In my previous blogs I have mentioned using an Accuquilt for cutting applique pieces. Here is a link to a previous post if you need a refresher or interested in what all the Accuquilt can do. https://www.mommaraedesigns.com/post/sew-saturday-struggling-to-make-that-perfect-quilt-block-a-few-tips-to-help-ease-the-frustration

I used thin cork for to applique onto another cork piece. I was experimenting with cork fabrics and really loved how this turned out for this sweet little crossbody bag. All the cork fabric was purchased from Amazon: orange. paisley. I used a wooden button for the center of the flower.

3. Best Methods:

For this project I used the Accuquilt. The single die cut has all the pieces for this flower: the main flower, the stem, and the leaves.

Here is a great video on how to use the Accuquilt

I really love mine--I even used the star shape to make earrings out of faux leather.

4. How to Applique cork to another Fabric.

You can't use pins on cork fabric unless you want the pin holes to show. You can paste them on using a fabric glue like Aleenes or your can use heat bond which is a two sided iron on much like a patch. I think it is much easier to use a dab of glue that get out my iron and such. But either way is fine.

5. Finishing touches with embellishments.

I did both the satin stitch and the straight stitch for this project. I really like variegated threads. If you really want to get fancy you can stitch down the leaves and different parts of the flower. Stitching can really showcase your work.

I have made some free templetes you can download and print if you choose to make your own out of paper. I want to make the pumpkin and some leaves for autumn.
