HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT KIND OF CORK FOR YOUR PROJECT

As mentioned in my previous blog I have learned a lot about the different kinds of cork through trial and error, so today I will share what I have learned.

THE IN'S & OUT'S OF CORK FABRIC

I want to start out by explaining how and where to buy your cork fabrics. My two favorite places are here in the US even though cork is from spain. Sallietomato.com & fabricfunhouse.com have built companies here in the United States and carry a large selection of cork (leather) fabrics.

MB Cork has a large selection of cork fabrics along with various other products. Their prices are comparable to the companies in the US but you have to pay shipping. Regular shipping times can take up to 30 days for your cork to arrive. You can expedite through DHL shipping but it is $30+ to have it shipped within a week.

Plus, I found the cork to vary in texture and I didnt understand at the time why. MB cork doesn't describe their cork fabrics in detail like the companies I found here in the US.

However, saying this I made some gorgeous projects with MB cork fabrics and some not so pretty cork projects. For instance, the smaller cork wallets, earrings, & kiss clutch coin purses are lovely, however, the larger projects like a purse I am sorely disappointed with the end result. Even with interfacing and purse foam, I just didnt like how the purse turned out.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF CORK AND THEIR USES

Example of rustic cork--it isnt the look I want I in a purse. It looks worn out before you even use it. The top finishing seam really hard to make pretty---grrr. So, I ended up putting a decorative ribbon to salvage this purse.

However, on a positive note I notice how the tassel flared out and wasnt stiff--wha la the idea of earrings come into play.

sallietomato.com and fabricfunhouse.com are the two United States Companies I purchase from these days. I try to buy from the US as much as possible and I really like these two companies for their customer service and quick shipping. Both offer free shipping if >$200 and offer wholesale prices for businesses.

LETS DIVE A LITTLE DEEPER ABOUT KINDS OF CORK--

SURFACE CORK--is my absolute favorite for purses and larger cork projects. It is sturdier, has a shiny coat, end result is better, and it is a dream to work with! In the description it will say Surface Cork.

Your can purchase at either company fabricfunhouse.com. or sallietomato,com--remember to use code MONARAE if purchasing from sallie tomato

The lining is from my fabric stash--if you are like me you have LOTS :)

The rose gold hard ware came from Amazon:

Let talk about thread--I use only Sulky threads. Sulky sells high quality threads in various & kinds. I like to use a 30wt, cotton threads, or my ultimate favoite is their variegated threads. I use a variegated a lot when doing top stitching. Here is a sampler pack to get you started or visit their thread chart

RUSTIC CORK is great for smaller projects like this bifold wallet. It is slighly thinner and comes in so many different colors and designs. Both sallietomato.com and fabricfunhouse.com carry rustic cork.
