So excited to write about this section--it is the fun part after selecting and receiving your cork fabric.
As discussed in previous parts there are different kinds of cork fabrics to choose from: Surface Cork, Rustic Cork, Printed Designs Cork, Inlay Cork and different thicknesses of cork.
How thick you cork can determine what kind of project you want to make such as a purse which can have many layers to a simple coin purse/pouch. Lets discuss what equipment may be needed for your project you have in mind.
QUESTIONS ON WHAT EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES MAY BE NEEDED FOR YOUR PROJECT.
Can I cork on my home sewing machine? Yes you can if your machine has some power for the extra layers of cork for instance straps are usually four layers thick. Also to consider does your pressor foot raise high enough to fit your fabric underneath? There is an accessory called a Button Clearance Plate to ease the transition to thicker fabrics. https://amzn.to/3I8dIM6 cost $5.99 with free shipping if you have Amazon Prime.
What kind of sewing machine can I use? Usually a simple Heavy Duty Machine will work. Singer has been around for decades and still delivers a great machine for the price. I have had many Singer Sewing machines throughout the years and still use a couple of them when all I need is a simple straight stitch. https://amzn.to/3nzc3Fy--Singer 4423 Heavy Duty Sewing Machine for $199.99 is a great starting point if you havent used a machine in awhile or new to sewing.
Janome is another great machine but a little higher end https://amzn.to/3bFYx09--$1599. I have never owned this machine but have many friend who swear buy this company. I actually went to a dealer and tried because I am in the market for a slightly simplier machine than I currently use. I love it. But I found it is cheaper on Amazon than through a dealership.
My absolute favorite machine is a Husqvarna. I used my Designer 1 for over 20 years until the buttons wore out and dealer said they couldnt be replaced cause my machine is too old. I bought an EPIC 2 for half price--$8,000 is does about anything I want including embroidery. But, like I said I need a slightly simplier machine. Really thinking of a Janome. Just wanted to give you some options.
For cutting cork a rotary cutter is the best. This 45mm fits great in my hand perfect https://amzn.to/3y9lb8O but my favorite is this smaller rotary cutter 28mm https://amzn.to/3Ny4qKi. The blade seems to last a lot longer for cutting cork with the smaller one and the larger ones for fabric. It may just be me:) The rotary blades are pricey--so I tend to use them longer that I should. I have been know to push down so hard it skips the ruler--about cut my little finger off one day--so be careful.
If using a rotary cutter you need a self healing mat. I wore my one out and just received this one in yesterday. Anxoius to try it out--it is a Fiskers 24" X 36" slightly longer than my other one that I have had for over 20 years--they last a long time. https://amzn.to/3nu2c3X
Recommend investing in a known brand like Fiskers or Olfa. Good Products.
What size ruler? I have many different sizes but these three are my favorites just because they have a non-skid backing--dont slide around as much--big numbers making it easier to see when cutting. https://amzn.to/3I8hXHw
So, you have your machine--oh I forgot you will likely need a teflon foot. It helps glide over the cork fabric with ease--self-healing mat, rulers & rotaty cutters--almost ready to get started!
I buy most of my stuff off of Amazon since COVID hit--now I just simply dont want to go hunting for stuff--I order on line and bought to my door. And now with the price of gas...
